勝敗を競う形式を取るが、アメリカのプロレス団体のWWEはあらかじめ作られた台本に則って行われている「エンターテインメント」であることを明らかにしている。理由としては、筋肉増強剤などの昨今のプロスポーツと薬物の問題が根底にあるが、その他にも、スポーツ委員会よりも興行（娯楽）として登録する方が保険料が低く済みコストダウンに繋がることや、株式上場の際に経営透明化という観点から業務内容を公開する必要があったためである。
